[ Summer had started weeks ago and for the beginning of it the kids had found themselves on the Friar farm. Lucas kept trying to get Farkle to do things like ride a horse for the first week which the boy promptly refused to do. It was only midway into the second week that he did. He found he enjoyed it and spent the night riding a horse around staring up at the stars twinkling in the sky.
...It was also around this time that he began to notice a certain brunette treating him differently. She seemed to find a way to drag herself and Maya away on most occasions. If she couldn't manage that then she wasn't really looking at him no matter what he tried. Even today, on the way back to his family's large home, she barely talked to him.
His stomach recoiled at the thought thinking he'd done something to her. So once they were home he opened his mouth to ask what-- But then Auggie was out there dragging them away to play. Riley dismissed herself to see her parents, but Farkle stayed there to play with the younger boy who was so much like a brother.
It's only after a late lunch that Farkle follows Riley out of the room and keeps doing so until she pays attention to him. ]
[ Summer had been a time of realization to her, a summer where she had realized that no matter how she pushes it down it'll still hang deep in her. Clawing its way back up her and she absolutely hated it. Since the beginning of fifth year she had felt like something else was in the air whenever she was with Farkle but she'd ignore it. She continues to admire Lucas from a far but even through those times Farkle came first.
She hated it when their eyes locked on the Friar's farm and there hands froze there touching one another lightly. The little bugger climbed up from its deep dark hole and opened her eyes.
What made it worse was mama Friar's knowing looks so she did was she did best she avoided the problem. She tried to avoid her feelings as much as she could and most of all she avoided him until fate took it's course. Fate decided to step in when their back home and at his home to one of their families gatherings.
It's not like she was enjoying not talking to him. In fact, she was itching to just speak to him but she knew she'd make a fool of her self in front of him and he's know right away. She quickly spins to his following figure, scaring herself the moment she sees those blue eyes once again.
Don't melt, Matthews.
Her gaze doesn't last long before her eyes down cast on the tile floors of the Minkus Household.]
[ His heart plummets in his chest when she turns to him. He opens his mouth to ask if he did something wrong-- But he's thought about that a million times. The most he's done was in charms class month ago when he beat her to an answer. Maybe he somehow looked at her funny during the trip and that's why? But he had ended up spending most of his time with Lucas and Zay since she wouldn't exactly talking to him.
Swallowing, he shakes his head. ]
I need to find my best friend, I wanted to show her something.
[ Her mouth turns dry only to glance up at him for a mere second but just in that second her heart start to beat faster and colour fills her cheeks. She's always been easily affected by those she was interested in, gosh she hated that trait of hers.
She wipes her hands against her jeans, finally looking at him but avoiding his eyes at costs. She gives a feign smile and steps slightly back.]
I'm right here, Farkle. What are you going on about?
[ He flinches at the sound of that life. He always knew her better than anyone else but it was that laugh that gave her away. Her laughter was his favorite sound in the world, but that wasn't it. Averting his own eyes he responds quickly. ]
If she was replaced by a faker... I'll-- just-- go do what I was going to do now...
but I am always here for you, Riley, I hope you know that.
I'm here, Farkle. Always. Y-You're my best friend.
[ Everything was burning inside of her as her heart beat against her chest. She wanted to tell him everything, how she felt and how everything changed but she can't even get herself to move closer to him.
No, that isn't a good idea. His mere touch could burn her or better yet make her into a blubbering mess. ]
You spent a lot of time with Lucas and Zay over the summer as did I with Maya and Mama Friar. Summer just had different plans for us. [ She lies with that fake smile painted on her lips. It wasn't like she could stop herself from liking him so deeply.
[Riley Matthews was they type of girlfriend to text their other half constantly, making sure they were ok and much more but when it came to Farkle Minkus she always preferred seeing him in person and maybe that inflicted a lot of intimate moments.
So she dresses in her favourite dress and prepares herself to go the Minkus household with a happy smile on her face but she doesn't expect what she sees when she walks into Farkle's room]
[ It'd only been a few weeks since school ended and Farkle hated more than ever being home. He'd spent most of the last year saving his money to get his own flat but then told himself it was only one more summer... And then he came home and now here he was having to gingerly putting on clothing while refusing to look at the mirror.
He'd paused putting his short on, where the worst of it was, to idly confuse if it was wrong to go ahead and get a flat. He'd just pay for it during the school year and it'd be there, right?
But it's also that moment he hears his door open and freezes in his spot. There's a cold terror that it might be one of his parents and he moves hastily to get up and turn to whoever entered the room. Which also turned to be a very bad idea as he became petrified to even move or speak. Her name on his lips but he can't seem to make a sound.]
[ She stood at his door her brown eyes staring at him in concern, her flat covered feet take a step towards him. She's analyzing the situation she just walked into, trying to find a conclusion but she doesn't want to believe assumptions. She needs to hear it from him.] F-Farkle?
[ Farkle bit his lip. All at once his ability to move floods back and he pulls the shirt on over his head even as he winces. It's not like she hasn't seen him naked before, just not like this. They were in the safety of school, weeks away from his parents. He winces slightly as he pulls it on, but forces his features to be the usual cool mask. ]
What are you doing here? You should have let me know-- I could have planned something.
[ Her ears seem to mute his words as she takes walks towards him and presses a soft kiss on his cheeks as a hello. She doesn't smile, not even a fake one but she doesn't seem to say anything just yet. Moving her hand to fix the bangs of his hair in an impulsive way. ]
When do we ever plan anything?
[ There's another pregnant pause before she licks her lips and caresses the boys cheek before emitting a soft sigh. ]
Most importantly, when were you ever planning to tell me? [ She gestures towards him as a frown seemed to be painted on her features. ]
[ He stands tensely as she approaches, not sure of what to expect. His mouth dries and he expects her to be mad and he's not sure he can deal with that right now. He's so tired of yelling and fighting and all of the meanings behind it. ]
We planned for Pippin and ice skating.
[He tries to reason but his words fall flat, eyes darting away from her. When she speaks again he steps away and goes to look at his desk.]
...There isn't anything to tell. I just did something stupid, that's all.
[ She's watching all his movements and she knows him just as well as he knows her. This time she can't read him, she can't tell whats going on in his beautiful genius brain of his.]
It's already two weeks into the school year. Farkle Minkus has remained on edge since the first day of school. There are letters from home, but he refuses to read them. His insides churns anytime he looks at them, pulling up memories of fighting and moments alone with his father. Just yesterday he threw them away without even opening. He's relieved by the fact people rarely ask about how he's feelings or his homelife. Or even that he's always consistently wore long sleeves and pants, since they don't question it now and he wouldn't know what to say. The bruises were still there.
There were other penalties, though. A sinking numbness that forces him to realize that maybe during the end of last year they were right. He didn't know what feelings were or what proper relationships were about. He tries hard to figure it out, because he's sure he loves his friends. But does he really? It led him to branching away from them since the beginning of the year. He still says hi and smiles, but he doesn't talk to them as much as he would have.
Of course they were starting to notice but he still plays it off as being worried about school. It's one class wherein he didn't raise his hand even one that both Isadora and Riley seem to worry. Isadora approaches him first to ask why he let her answer all the questions, because competition was their things. He just responds he wasn't feeling well and they'll be back at it tomorrow, but invites her to study tonight. That seems to appease her as she goes back to his stuff.
For his part, Farkle doesn't glance around the room as he gathers up his stuff and moves to go into the hallway, eyes faraway.
[ She makes sure she's out of the room before him and that was difficult for her clumsy self. She was determined though which makes her move faster. Upon seeing him head in her direction she side steps in his path. ]
[ He pauses at that voice hesitating. He could pretend he didn't hear it but that wouldn't be right. Instead he glances up, fingers curling tightly around his bag. It's hard for him to lie to Riley, she'd always been there, but he waffles for things to say. ]
[ He starts at the touch, glancing over at her still somewhat surprised by the little height he has over her since summer. Farkle tries, but can't put a thumb on what he's supposed to say for a moment, pressing his lips together. ]
What's with that? There's nothing bothering any of us.
5th Year summer

Did you hit your head while horse back riding? I swear, if you got hurt Lucas won't hear the end of it- I mean, are you feeling alright?
Re: 5th Year summer

I just miss my best friend.

Beginning of Fourth Year
There were other penalties, though. A sinking numbness that forces him to realize that maybe during the end of last year they were right. Wanna walk with me?

Just like how we always tell each other if something is bothering us.
Re: Beginning of Fourth Year
